Within
five minutes, the cold, still, lifeless body of Taylor Nelson had
lost its shock value. James
Parker looked at himself in his bathroom mirror under the harsh
fluorescent light. He did not look a day older than yesterday and
that disappointed him. His full head of silver stranded hair showed
no signs of receding; his face had no more wrinkles than the year
before. There was a glimmer of ill sighted hope when James saw that
his skin looked a bit paler than usual. This was a satisfaction that
quickly faded when he discovered the tone of his skin to be the new
morning's illusion. A reddish blush soon graced his cheeks:
Seven
months after the assassination of our 50th
president, Meghan Marguerite McCain,
Vice
President Daniel Thompson has settled in and the country is finally
ready to push forward.
James
Parker frequently felt the urge to call someone, hoping to take his
mind off this reality, but he is alone in the world now- spare the
waitress at the diner. His last friend, Elaine Bryant, died of heart
failure five years ago. Since that time he has shut himself away in
his studio apartment home. No computer, no cell phone. Just the
bleached-blonde Lana Diaz speaking from her digital window with a
quiver of faux sorrow during every news story.
Elaine did have a
dying request for her old friend, urging him to invest in a
“Life-Alert” necklace at his advanced age. He was true to his
word and now often runs his thumb over the little red button,
fantasizing about the day he could make the choice not to press it.
It is not so much that James Parker wanted to die, but he did
experience a need to separate himself from a world in which he no
longer had a place.
The
victims, thirty year-old Samantha Gainy and her son Michael, were
found dead in their
respective rooms by husband and father Kevin Gainy.
Mrs. Ganiy's
lover, twenty three year old Ian Halloway, was found dead in the
kitchen with a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
James Parker watched the television set with intensity and was
amazed by the swiftness of the media coverage. The third news van
arrived on site nearly twenty minutes before the first police car.
Only minutes later would the ambulance arrive.
